Abstract

The following article describes a process with which the manufacturing process of the surface finish of luxury yachts can be optimized and thus made more efficient. For this purpose, a method was developed for the reconstruction of ship surfaces from point clouds, taking into account the construction data and aesthetic requirements. This method was developed for processing large amounts of data. The aim is to develop a target model for the coating of ship surfaces that is optimized in terms of requirements. For this purpose, a laser scanner point cloud is automatically cleaned of disruptive elements and classified. A curvature-based grid is created that serves as the basis for the automated modeling. Using construc-tional and aesthetic specifications, a design model is deformed and the point cloud is approximated. The surfaces created in this way can then be used for quality assurance of the filler application. By using the developed methods, a reduction of the evaluation time of more than 60 % can be achieved.
