Abstract

The assessment of the sustainability of concrete relies on the life cycle assessment of its raw materials. The environmental impact generated by the production, transport and placement of the concrete must be considered. The sustainability of a given concrete can only be increased by preventing any adverse effect of the reduced environmental impact on its performance and durability. The key to producing sustainable concrete is to ensure a sufficient workability of the concrete at a significantly reduced water ratio. For the reduced amount of water to be sufficient to fill all the voids between the particles of the mix, its packing density must be increased accordingly. At the current stage, one of the major technical obstacles to introducing environmentally optimized concretes is certainly the strongly increased sensitivity of the mixes to variations in the properties and batching of the input materials. Technical obstacles to be overcome in the future are the accurate measurement of initial moisture and the minimization of fluctuations in the packing density of the particles.
