N2 - This chapter considers physical space in relation to function, appropriation, perception, and to emotional as well as to economic, psychological and social aspects. The development of the topic of Raumgeschehen is itself in a constant process of transformation in the sense that it realises its potential. The chapter describes the way of arriving at design research as reciprocal appropriation and adaptation, as an interplay of transformation. The sketch reflects the increasing awareness that there was a need to define Raumgeschehen and for a more complex interweaving of intuition and rational work. The chapter illustrates the application of the inventive turnings in practice, which means understanding the whole research process as design. Spatial design disciplines are concerned with finding solutions and aesthetic expression for developments ranging from individual buildings to large-scale regions: the stuff of the real world. In general terms, designing is a projective, shaping activity that is in a state of constant aesthetic discourse.
