Abstract

Modern elastomers must fulfill several technical requirements, especially with increasing focus on light-weighing of composites. The subject of this work is on the study of an engineered polysaccharide system as reinforcing filler for rubber composites. This new class of tailored polysaccharides is based on the direct and selective enzymatic polymerization of sucrose in water to α-1.3-glucans with tailored morphologies. The incorporation of this filler system by latex compounding with NBR showed clearly a reinforcing effect in several physical properties. The percolation threshold could be determined to be approximately 30 phr in this model system. The surface modification with various trichloroalkylsilane coupling agents showed that 5-hexenyltrichlorosilane had a positive effect on the physical properties of the composites.
