Abstract
Synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images acquired over Mediterranean coastal waters and over the Greenland Sea from the First European Remote Sensing satellite ERS-1 showing sea surface manifestations of katabatic wind fields and atmosheric boundary layer rolls are analyzed. By using the CMOD4 wind scatterometer model, the sea surface wind speed associated with these atmospheric phenomena is determined. In both cases the wind speed at the sea surface simulated by atmospheric models and derived from the ERS-1 SAR images show reasonably good agreement.
