Abstract

Cardiac output is considered an important indicator of cardiac function during pregnancy. Due to the risks associated with the use of invasive methods, noninvasive cardiac output assessment is preferred within the obstetric population. Cardiac output can be measured using different noninvasive techniques, such as echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging, inert gas rebreathing, bioimpedance/bioreactance, and finger plethysmography, all of which are discussed within this chapter. Some considerations of each method in relation to cardiac output measurement in the parturient are also discussed. Recommendations for noninvasive cardiac output assessment during pregnancy are provided.
