Abstract

Monte Carlo simulations are used in power system stability analysis to account for random uncertainties in the systems. A limitation of the method is the identification of rare failure events due to the required sample size. If the sample size is too small, rare failures may remain undetected and the stability of the system may be misjudged. However, if the sample size is too large, the computational time can increase disproportionately, making the simulation inefficient. Subset simu-lation is an advanced Monte Carlo method that addresses these disadvantages by introducing intermediate failure events and using so-called conditional samples, leading to reliable and efficient simulations. The method is used widely in the field of mechanical and civil engineering, but barely known in the field of electric power engineering. Therefore, this paper introduces the Subset simulation to the small signal stability analysis of electric power systems.
