Abstract
The areas in which speech and language therapists work are constantly changing due to internal and external factors (e.g. changes in the public health sector, demographic change, and inclusion of speech and language therapy in Germany as a university field of study). To access new areas of work it is necessary to first explore them. Speech and language therapists in Germany are increasingly working in the field of supporting language development of young children. Hence this article overviews current trends in theory and praxis in this field and discusses nationwide aspects, as well as those specific to the individual federal states. An evaluation from the perspective of speech and language therapists showing future challenges concludes the article.
