Abstract

Synthetic maps of ecological functions in relation to climate and immissions (= air pollution inputs) constitute an important link between problem-orientated analyses and the integration of microclimate and air quality issues into planning. These maps exhibit the system of processes of air exchange currents and the functional connections between quantified processes of air exchange currents and pollution. First, the study area is divided into polluted areas and into compensatory areas with respect to their pollution relief potential. Pollution relief, air exchange processes and the encountered air pollution situation can be assessed by differentiating between areas and using different methods. The spectrum of working techniques, reaching from simple assessment procedures to numerical models, is explained in summary. The resulting map of ecological functions in relation to climate and immissions (ranging in scale from 1:5,000 to 1:50,000) always combines the elements of pollution levels, production of cold/fresh air, and air exchange systems. The total volume of the charted information and the degree to which an individual information is detailed depend on the respective situation. Maps serving as a basis for planning are derived from the obtained information and complement the map of functional interdependencies.
