Abstract
It has often been found that recultivation measures involving planting trees and shrubs on compacted domestic waste are not successful. The main reason for this is the exposure of the plants to the emissions from the waste. The lack of an adequate barrier can lead to high concentrations of gases, high temperatures and lack of water in the rooting area. The results obtained from controlled experimental plots show that various trees and shrubs can be used for planting if an appropriate sealing system is present, obstructing the passage of gases and ensuring appropriate temperatures in the rooting area.
