Abstract

This paper investigates the determinants of applying for study abroad scholarships. Explorative qualitative interviews with three students suggested that the habitus type of students who apply for study abroad scholarships is characterized by four dimensions: 1) the desire for personality development, individuality, and self-determination; 2) evident self-efficacy and optimism about the future; 3) the use of situative strategies for action to cope with unforeseen challenges; and 4) the use of joy-oriented strategies for action in a hedonistic sense. A quantitative study (N= 172) building on this preliminary investigation confirmed findings regarding the first three dimensions. The study shows that students who apply for study abroad scholarships have a different habitus syndrome. Students not belonging to this group self-select in advance by applying less frequently.
