Abstract
Education for sustainable development must be a fixed, interdisciplinary component of school education and established as a fundamental cornerstone for a sustainable society. The decentralized control of the German education system by curricula of the 16 individual federal states, coupled with the separation of general and vocational education, presents a challenge to the creation of an integrated overview of the integration of the topic of sustainability in the individual curricula. This paper presents the first overview of the integration of education for sustainable development, focusing on individual curricula as examples. Firstly, the German education system and the associated structure of the curricula are considered. The approach used to analyze the curricular requirements is then described, and the initial results are presented. The paper provides a framework for further research and at the same time presents the authors’ initial results.
