Abstract
The performance of metallic components is largely determined by their subsurface properties. Within SPP 2086 "Surface Conditioning in Machining,"a self-regulating manufacturing system was developed to specifically control the martensite content of metastable austenitic steels during cryogenic turning. The core of the approach is a magneto-inductive testing system integrated into the machine tool, which records the martensitic transformation in situ. Evaluation of higher harmonic signal components enables a robust correlation with the α'-martensite content, which is incorporated into a model for dynamic process control. Experiments confirmed that defined target values can be reproducibly achieved.
