Abstract
This paper develops the concept of "founding scenes" in dialogue with Heinrich Popitz' sociology of power. Following recent work by Andrew Abbott and Richard Swedberg we examine a popular but rarely explicated form of theorizing in which theorems are developed by means of scenic gambits without using methodologically controlled empirical "data." Deploying the battle for deckchairs on a cruise ship as a founding scene in the proposed sense Popitz constructs an experimental reference to reality. This contribution analyzes how Popitz empirically anchors his theory of power in the scene and discusses the potentials and limitations of this strategy. In a final step, it generates general statements about the functions and effects of founding scenes for sociological theorizing.
