Abstract
The interferometry of mater waves, i. e. the exploitation of the wave characteristics of matter by manipulating the internal states of atoms with lasers, is of increasing interest for geodesy. This article gives a short introduction in the theoretical background of atom interferometry and describes possible applications in geodesy with emphasis on gravimetry. The limiting factors of state-of-the-art relative and absolute gravimeters are presented. The potential of the new technology is discussed. Particular attention is paid to the operation outside of controlled laboratory environments, an important prerequisite for future use in geodesy.
