Abstract

Partial discharges are local partial breakdowns of the insulation system and occur in gaseous, liquid and solid insulation mediums. They are caused by local increased field strengths and inhomogeneous electrode arrangements. Over time, the partial discharge can grow further and conductive paths can establish. This can lead to a full breakdown and destruction of the high voltage asset [1]-[3]. There are electrical, chemical, acoustic and optical methods available for the measurement or detection of partial discharges. The light emissions of the partial discharge in the ultraviolet range (UV) can be made visible with UV-sensitive camera sensors enabling for the optical partial discharge detection [4]-[6]. Cameras have the advantage, that the electric system remains unchanged and there are no coupling devices or sensors necessary. This work introduces three different modified camera prototypes for the optical detection of partial discharges and compares their images with a parallel executed electrical partial discharge measurement following IEC 60270. The camera prototypes were developed aiming for a more cost-effective alternative to the commercial systems available.
